What is a Barktale?

Petey...The Smiling Dog

First, I have to start out this story saying, I'm ashamed but I do not have a picture of what I am about to describe. However, Petey is so funny, we thought we better tell you anyway. We, at muttmonthly.com, met a dog that knows how to smile. When he sees you he smiles...Seriously.

As you imagine we have a theory on this. We found a dog that understands human expression so well, he's learned to emulate it. Petey smiles at you in greeting, letting you know he's happy to see you. He smiles when you give him a treat because you've made him happy.

When I first met Pete, his tail started furiously wagging, then I got a little scared. Was this dog barring its teeth at me. There they were...but I can see all of the pinks of his gums. His whole lip was lifted, not in a snarl but to show me his teeth. The dog was smiling at me.

Pete's most recent adventure began a couple of months ago. While part of his family moved to Arizona, another part was still back east where he was staying for the time being. A whole new place, a whole new set of rules, a whole bunch of new trouble to get into.

As far as Pete is concerned, he's your best buddy, all smiles until you turn your back. Then he's off, like a shot. The dog is probably some sort of shepherd mix. But he also must have some sort of Australian sheep dog in him or something. At times he uses his powers for good, like when he heards up all the kids in the family. At other times he uses his great speed and great intelligence for evil...well not really evil.

It turns out that Pete has been running wild through the neighborhoods of northern New Jersey recently. The family assumed he'd been getting tired out and eventually returning. They assumed he wasn't noticed by anyone, and that he wasn't in any sort of trouble. It turns out Pete, with the cunning of a sheep dog, has been sneaking around meeting and greeting new neighbors, visiting bbq's and other events. He's spent the day with some little kids. He's also spent some time in the back of a police car...Twice. Pete, who does not get along well with other canines was waiting patiently for his new pals in blue in the patrol car, when he realized (twice) that they had invited another dog along for the ride. Not interested in where that party was headed, Pete manuveured his way free of the patrol car, twice...

Pete has moved on to new locations and another horizon. Hopefully Arizona is ready for his exploits.

Best of luck, Pete, in your new home! Visit soon!
